October 30 to November 2, 2008 Yayoi Theatre Movement presents Shinju based on Sonezaki Shinju by Chikamatsu Monzaemonadapted by Yayoi Hirano and Manami Hara Shinju is a classic love story set in Osaka Japan in 1703. Despite their class differences Toku and Ohatsu fall hopelessly in love and promise to marry. Life, however, has a cruel way of forcing them to choose the only way to be together; to commit double suicide so they can be reunited in the next life. Based on a true story this popular 18th century Kabuki script by Monzaemon Chikamatsu has been adapted by Yayoi Theatre Movement as a dance and movement piece accompanied by music from J.S.Bach and the unique sounds of the Shamisen, Koto and Shakuhachi. |
